San Diego

Took the San Diego trolley today for the most common sights.  Can get on and off at any of them. First we went to Coronado Island then to Balboa Park where I used to chase peacocks with regularity during WWII.  On to Little Italy and Old town where we had margaritas and some lunch.  Back on the trolley to the harbor where we saw the ship that buried Osama bin Laden at sea (Yippee!) then on to downtown, the shopping area, the Gas Lamp District and the Bayfront where we are staying.

We got off in Coronada, walked around the Del Coronado Hotel and onto Coronado Beach.  Dr. Beach named it number one last year, just like he chose Siesta Key Beach the year before.

From our hotel room window on the 28th floor we have an incredible view of the harbor and this morning we watched Dole unloading a container ship with approximately 288 containers.  It is an interesting process to watch.  Tong like devices take the containers off the ship and load them onto a trailer which is then towed by a large semi cab to a holding area.  As each one comes off the ship, it is scanned.  We assume the trailers will be on the road tomorrow and empty ones are loaded to go to Ecuador for more bananas.  This is done three times a week.  Hard to believe we consume that many bananas in the US.

San Diego's top four sources of income are 1. Manufacturing, 2. Military, 3. Tourism and 4. Agriculture.  Both the Marines and the Navy have large presences here.
